The following are diet guidelines to follow
after gastric bypass surgery. You will go home on a liquid
diet for 1-2 weeks. You will then progress to full liquid
diet and gradually add pureed foods over the next 1-3 weeks.
When the doctor allows you may start trying solid
foods. Included here are suggestions for making this a
safe and smooth transition as you learn to eat with your new
gastric pouch. Write down any questions you have so that you
can have them answered at your followup appointments after
surgery. Click on the links in blue for more detailed
suggestions.
IN THE HOSPITAL:
On the day after surgery, you will
start on sips of clear liquids (1 oz. every 15 minutes of
water, diluted juice, tea, coffee, broth). You
will get the maximum amount of protein from these products.
You will continue this diet when you first go home.
YOU SHOULD ALSO
TAKE THE FOLLOWING:
CHEWABLE
OR LIQUID MULTIVITAMIN WITH MINERALS.
PEPCID
OR EQUIVALENT TO PREVENT ULCERS.
TUMS
OR OTHER SOURCE OF CALCIUM.
